RECENT ACTIVITIES – 2023

Our Recent Activities/Donations:

RailGiants Museum, Pomona CA: RailGiants Train Museum is a railroad museum of historic trains located at the Fairplex in Pomona, California, United States. It is owned and maintained by the Southern California Chapter of the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society. It has over 80 volunteers and from November through July, runs the second Sunday of every month, from 11:00am to 4:00pm, for the general public. It has several historic locomotives and it used to be the home of the historic Big Boy 4014, which has since been restored by Union Pacific and runs on excursions. every time you visit, you see an upgraded exhibit, thanks to the dedication of the volunteers who serve there.

California Science Center: This museum needs no introduction. This is one of the few Science Museums which has free admission. This is the home of the Space Shuttle Endeavour (which had been to space 25 times). In a few years, a brand-new exhibit built around Endeavour, with an External Tank and a pair of Solid Rocket Boosters, will be ready, making it the only exhibit of its kind in the world.

Mound Bayou Museum of African American Culture: Nestled in the heart of Mississippi, Mound Bayou stands as a testament to the indomitable spirit of its founders, a beacon of hope, and a symbol of the African-American experience. Mound Bayou is where the Civil Rights leader T.R.M Howard, started several organizations and companies for the benefit of African Americans. He founded an insurance company, restaurant, hospital, home construction firm, and a large farm where he raised cattle, quail, hunting dogs, and cotton. He also built a small zoo and a park, as well as the first swimming pool for Black people in Mississippi. In the museum, you will know about him and the history of Mound Bayou.

Planes of Fame Museum, Chino, CA: This is an amazing museum with several historic planes, with most of them flight worthy. The highlight of the museum is the Flying Demo on the first Saturday of each month. An informative Hangar Talk precedes each Flying Demo. Most of the renovations, upgrades and maintenance of all the aircrafts, if not all, are performed by an amazing set of volunteers. Recently, an annex for this museum was opened in Santa Maria, CA, near Santa Barbara.

Fannie Lou Hamer Scholarship Fund. The Fannie Lou Hamer museum is located in Ruleville MS. The organization provides educational scholarship to students. This is our second donation to this effort.

Glenn L Martin Aviation Museum, Middle River, MD; This museum is located at Martin State Airport in Middle River, Maryland. It educates visitors through the use of exhibits, artifacts, archival materials and stories about aviation in Maryland over the last hundred years, with an emphasis on the Glenn L. Martin Company and the more recent Lockheed Martin histories. The museum relies on volunteers who run the museum and assist the visitors with admissions, store purchases, and tours. They also help with visiting school groups, other educational projects and aircraft restorations.

Ida B Wells Museum, Holly Springs, MS: This museum is located at the Spires Bolling House on North Randolph Street and Salem Avenue in Holly Springs, Mississippi. The fearless investigative jourlist, educator and early civil rights leader, Ida B. Wells, was born on the property where her mother was a “famous cook.” The historic value of the home makes it an ideal location for the Ida B. Wells-Barnett Museum.  Having undergone an extensive restoration, the Spires Bolling House has been preserved as an important landmark for future generations.

Tennessee Williams Birthplace Museum, Columbus, MS. In addition to the museum, this site serves also as the visitor center for the town of Columbus MS. We were given an introduction of the organization and the additions to this site which are planned in the near future.

Tennessee Williams Boyhood Museum, Clarksdale, MS; This museum is located in the four upstairs bedrooms in the former rectory of St. George’s Episcopal Church, once occupied by Tennessee William’s family. The museum, provides detailed history of the writer, the curator being a subject matter expert on Tennessee Williams. The town has multiple sites related to the author and the tour is very well documented. This town also hosts annual Tennessee Williams festival.

American Space Museum and Walk of Fame, Titusville, FL: This museum has artifacts donated by individuals, astronauts, space workers, NASA and contractors. It is run by an enthusiastic group of volunteers. They conduct many space related activities: astronaut book signing, annual Apollo 1, Columbia and Challenger memorials, and in the last few years have started ‘ Stay Curious Broadcasts’.

Accord Civil Rights museum, St. Augustine, FL. This museum highlights the series of Civil Rights protests that occurred in St. Augustine, FL in 1964 and 1964. These were organized by local chapters of NAACP and SCLC. Many leaders including Dr. Martin Luther King were arrested during the protests. These protests are also considered to have aided the passage of the Civil Rights act of 1964.

Ella Baker Education Fund: This organization performs many historical and educational activities. Ella baker was a co-founder of the SCLC and the SNCC during the civil rights era. This funds will be used to highlight the Rosenwald Schools (Rosenwald School – Wikipedia ) in NC and also erecting a historic marker near Ella Baker’s home in Littleton, NC.
