RECENT ACTIVITIES – 2022

These are the organizations/museums we have donated to recently:

5. Matilda Joslyn Gage Foundation, Fayetteville, NY

Matilda Joslyn Gage was very unique and independent within the suffragist movement. In addition to women’s rights, she fought for African American and Native American rights. Her intense approach to remove the influence of church from the organization, made her look as really radical. After opposing the merger of the two suffragists organization in 1890, she resigned from the organization. Throughout her life she fought for women’s rights, particularly for women whose invention credits were taken away from them, even during those early times. This is particularly known as ‘Matilda Effect’. We were particularly lucky to be given the tour of the museum by the director Dr Sally Wagner.

6. Gerrit Smith Estate, Peterboro, NY

We had a highly informative tour of the Geritt Smith Estate, learning about the life story of the abolitionist Gerrit Smith. He donated substantial amount of money and land to the abolitionist movement and African Americans. His Estate was part of the Underground Railroad. His ambitious project, ‘Timbuctoo‘, though ended in a failure, shows his focus and determination. The Peterboro Land Office, his original office, still stands, and can be visited during the tour. We were fortunate to get a tour from Norm Dann, who is an authority on Gerrit Smith. The organization
